R12 R12 compression works upon the theory that a stereo spread can produce both vertical and horizontal "disorientation" for the listener. Vertical disorientation is achieved by a sense of distance: the louder a sound the closer, the quieter a sound the further away. Horizontal disorientation is achieved by the shift between the left and right channels. By dividing both fields into a grid, we have a number of possible positions into which audio play back can be placed. R12 uses 12 unique positions within the sound spread.
